Emerging from a single city-state, prove your dominance over local barbarians to establish your empire!
[All city sites populated with barbarians. All nations start with an additional warrior]
While I really enjoyed the mechanics of settling onto predefined city sites and given a modicum of choice of city centre, it just doesn't feel thematic. Why are settlers instantly populating abandoned houses? This mod populates all city sites with weaker barbarians to give more credibility to why the city sites are there. The player also starts with an additional warrior to set the stage for expansion beyond the starting city.
The change makes hardly any difference to the early expansion potential, but does put more pressure on orders and harder army management early on. First turns feel more like the pressure orders place on the mid game, so I'm not too concerned apart from first time players.
First ambition choice is now far tighter, 4 cities (used to be a no-brainer) or 5 kills (already had to clear barb cities, but do I abandon claim on them to punch a few more?). Turned out to be only 1 turn between the choices.
I believe the mod could work without the additional warrior, but does give players a safety net and confidence to push out early.
